Refinery Metallurgist #1300

Overview: The Refinery Metallurgist position will report to the Inspection Group Supervisor, located within the Maintenance Department. The successful candidate must have a strong technical background coupled with a willingness to perform field inspections of equipment and laboratory testing when required. A practical approach to the application of Metallurgical principles is a must.
Responsibilities:
1. Conduct work in a safe manner and in accordance with site safety/environmental requirements and standard operating procedures.
2. Provide daily support to the Refinery Inspection and Maintenance Departments regarding welding, repair recommendations, proper material substitution and metallurgical related issues for both fixed and rotating equipment.
3. Provide periodic support to the Engineering and Major Projects Department regarding proper material selections to enhance reliable operations.
4. Provide periodic support to the Inspection and Reliability Groups in the development of turnaround inspection and testing plans for fixed equipment.
5. Conduct fixed equipment failure analysis and reporting, including field metallography and metallographic failure analysis.
6. Conduct incident investigations and reporting utilizing the TapRooT methodology.
7. Coordinate contractors to conduct advanced nondestructive examinations and testing of fixed equipment and material samples as needed.
8. Interpret codes and specifications.
9. Participate professionally in a team environment.
Work Experience: Preferred candidate will have a minimum of 5 years experience as a Refinery or Chemical Plant Metallurgist. Specific experience should include:
- Metallographic failure analysis experience
- Field Metallography experience
- Familiarity with typical refining processes and fixed equipment and the proper selection of materials for reliable operation.
- Familiarity with refining equipment codes and standards such as the ASME B&PV & B31.3, API 510, 570, 571, 579, and 653.
- Familiarity with typical refining damage mechanisms and means for their prevention.
- Familiarity with the application of inspection non destructive examination techniques such as acoustic emissions testing, ultrasonic thickness and shear wave inspection, radiographic testing, penetrant testing, wet fluorescent magnetic particle testing, eddy current testing, magnetic flux exclusion testing and visual inspection of tanks, pressure vessels, and piping.
