March 2017 Market Report

The chemical/refining job market is starting to spring into action. There were a few positions that opened up at the beginning of the year, but we did not see the usual New Year’s group of new job openings. Many of the recruiters I have talked to, both internal to companies and external recruiters were slower in January and February. In the last two weeks, we have been seeing additional jobs coming open and the market is gaining momentum. March and April often see increases in job openings as that is the time that annual bonuses pay out. Many engineers wait until they receive their annual bonus before they turn in a resignation so we expect to see an increase in openings as a result. The typical chemical and refining industry roles in Houston such as Process Engineer and Maintenance/Reliability Engineer have been in relatively short supply so far this year. We expect that to improve. To date, the job hotspots have been Pharmaceutical related Process Engineers in the Midwest and Process Control Engineers across the Gulf Coast. We have also observed an increase in the number of management positions open and companies are more willing to hire from the outside for management talent. We hope your new year has gotten often to a great start! Let us know if we can help in any way.
